An artist-in-the-round performance series featuring JJ Grey, Marc Broussard, Anders Osborne, and Luther Dickinson, Southern Soul Assembly debuted the spring of 2014 to rave reviews. The highly seasoned artists and bandleaders have demonstrated a natural ability to contribute to each other’s music through harmonies and guitar, each building upon the others’ songs. Southern Soul Assembly draws from the rich legacy of American Southern culture. Their collaborative live shows cultivate heartfelt storytelling that draws from the members’ Southern roots, combining blues, funk, and rock to produce unique, full-bodied performances. “Just like food in the South, our music is greasier than most,” says member Marc Broussard.
Over the course of six albums and a decade of touring, JJ Grey's gritty blend of front porch soul and down-home storytelling has taken him around the world and back again. Beating the streets on nearly every continent, he and his band Mofro have sewn a continuous thread of laying-it-on-the-line shows that move folks to dance and at times to tears. “Impassioned singing, riff-based Southern rock, cold-blooded swamp funk and sly Memphis soul.” -The New York Times
As a member of the North Mississippi All-Stars, South Memphis String Band and The Word, Luther has made himself widely known as both a talented musician and as a producer with four Grammy nominations to prove it- three in the contemporary blues category and one in traditional folk.
Marc Broussard is an artist with a unique gift of channeling the spirits of classic R&B, rock and soul into contemporary terms. This gift has been a matter of common knowledge since 2002, when Broussard released his debut album, Momentary Setback, which he recorded and released independently at age 20. Marc’s song “Home” was a radio success and catapulted him onto the national touring stage. Broussard has been a featured performer on many shows including The Tonight Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Lopez Tonight, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Since his recording debut in 1989, Osborne has written virtually all of his own material and contributed memorable songs to a wide variety of artists. Two tunes co-written by Osborne appear on Keb Mo’s Grammy-winning 1999 release Slow Down. Country superstar Tim McGraw scored a #1 hit with Anders’ song “Watch The Wind Blow By.” He can also be seen performing in a recent episode of HBO’s New Orleans-based drama Treme. Osborne’s music ranges from muddy backwater blues to upbeat country rock, and fills in many of the gaps in between. “He’s a songwriter [with] astonishing range, and his vocals are expressive and pitch-perfect.” – NPR Music
